Thinking Allowed 28/02/22

Have you noticed how the UK is being ignored in world affairs? Our membership of the EU gave us an influence we expected but didn’t deserve. We have now realised our actual level. We’ve thrown away our influence in the world for the cause of vacuous patriotism.

I think the EU will adapt in positive ways following the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Countries on the edge are warming to it. In an increasingly interdependent world, it’s a tragedy that the UK gave away its place at the table, thereby losing power and influence to formulate policies. The sooner we rejoin the better!

  1. I have always considered the saying “patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel” to be entirely accurate. Patriotism should be about looking after people, ensuring they are well-fed, decently housed, free from poverty, and as much as possible happy. It isn’t about flag-waving, parades, and celebrities but humanity all of it.
Evelyn Waugh’s book Put Out More Flags, The title comes from the saying of an anonymous Chinese sage, quoted and translated by Lin Yutang in The Importance of Living (1937):

“A man getting drunk at a farewell party should strike a musical tone, in order to strengthen his spirit … and a drunk military man should order gallons and put out more flags in order to increase his military splendour.”

Putin doesn’t seem to need to be drunk.
